Former
illustrator turned fine artist, Phyllis Tarlow has spent
the last decade and more creating fine art paintings and
portraits of beloved homes, family members and pets - pursuits
that she finds nearer and dearer to her heart than the commercial
work she once did.
A resident of Hartsdale,
NY, Phyllis is a member of the Portrait Society of America
and the American Society of Portrait Artists, the Mamaroneck
Artists Guild, New Rochelle Art Assn., and several other
local art associations. She exhibits her work at Images
Gallery in Briarcliff Manor, NY, The Flatiron Gallery in
Peekskill, NY and the Framing Gallery in Hawthorne, NY,
and has had solo shows at The Manor Club in Pelham, NY,
and at Westfield Court in Stamford, CT. Her work has appeared
in numerous juried exhibitions, including those of the prestigious
Salmagundi Club in New York City and the Hudson Valley Art
Association, winning many awards through the years.
Phyllis's training includes
numerous classes in which she painted and drew from the
live model as well as taking workshops with renowned portrait
painters Daniel Greene and Michael Del Priore. She also
studied at the Reilly League of Artists in White Plains,
NY, and she holds a Master of Arts Degree in Art Therapy
/ Art Education from the College of New Rochelle.
During her earlier years
as an illustrator, Phyllis's work appeared in Reader's Digest
and other magazines as well as on young adult book covers,
in textbooks, and in advertising and promotional literature
for such companies as Chesebrough Pond, Gillette, Lederle
Labs and Dixie Lily.
Methods
and Mediums

Phyllis offers a choice of oil or watercolor for her color
portraits. Watercolor portraits are executed with a series
of controlled washes, which enable the artist to create
luminous skin tones and exacting detail. Oil colors offer
strength and richness of color and great opacity. Each medium
offers its own unique qualities and beauty.
Black and white portraits
of people and animals are rendered with graphite pencils,
and when creating house portraits, Phyllis works in pen
& ink or watercolor.
